A secondment agreement is a contract that allows an employee (the secondee) to temporarily work at a client’s site while remaining employed by their original employer. Despite the employee's physical absence from their workplace, they continue to receive their salary and accrue entitlements as if they were still at their original job. This type of agreement is useful for businesses that wish to have their employees collaborate with clients while ensuring that the employee's rights and benefits are maintained.

Termination 6.1 This Agreement will automatically terminate at the end of the Period of Secondment unless the parties have agreed, in writing, to an extension. 6.2 This Agreement may be terminated by any party giving one months notice in writing to the other parties.
Any extension will be subject to agreement with the employee, their substantive line manager and HR. The substantive manager should consider what this means for any backfill and make the necessary arrangements in good time.
A secondment is a temporary move of an employee to another department or agency in the core public administration and other organizations for which Treasury Board is the employer.
Some of the disadvantages of secondments are a lack of motivation when the employee returns to the substantive position as they see this as a demotion. They are not engaged and therefore do not perform as well as they could or would have in the past.
