Why extending employment dates is a bad idea on your resume. The short answer is: Because its super easy to get caught. Hiring managers can discover that youve fudged your dates of employment when: Running a background check.
Is leaving dates off a resume ever OK? Leaving dates off of some older jobs on your resume is generally an acceptable practice to avoid age discrimination. My rule of thumb is that if the professional experience or education happened more than 15 to 20 years ago, lose the date.
Generally you should list your work experience in reverse chronological order and add only months and years of your time on the job. Employment dates expressed in years only is also acceptable and beneficial, if you have short gaps in employment, or if you were at a certain job for an extended period of time.
If youre on the fence, theres no harm in sending an updated, error-free resume as long as you dont call attention to what has changed between versions. But the best thing you can do for yourself is proofread, proofread, and proofread some more before you submit your resume so you can avoid this dilemma!
For date ranges, use space-dash-space formatting: June August 2017 not June-August 2017. Be sure that same style of dash (shorter hyphen or slightly longer en-dash) is used consistently throughout. Align dates on the right margin.
When building your resume, dates can be an essential element that shows hiring managers how many years of experience you have. They can also tell employers how recently you graduated, how long youve been an active member of an association or how long youve held a relevant certification.
What a background check will flag, however, is the dates that you were employed in each role youve listed on your resume. That means that if youve been less than truthful about your dates of employment in a particular job, youre likely to get found out.
Here are some tips on how to update your resume for a new role. 1 Review the job description. 2 Format your resume. 3 Customize your summary and skills. 4 Update your work experience. 5 Highlight your education and training. 6 Proofread and edit your resume. 7 Heres what else to consider.
