Editing a file in Linux can be done using text editors like Nano, VI, or Emacs. Nano is a beginner-friendly editor with basic navigation and editing commands. To edit a file in Nano, open it with the nano command and use arrow keys for navigation and basic editing commands.
The edit command prompt is a colon (:), which is shown after starting the editor. If you are editing an existing file, then you have some lines in edits buffer (its name for the copy of the file you are editing). When you start editing, edit makes the last line of the file the current line.
In Linux there are two commands that are used to edit files: vi command and nano command . Run vi command to edit text in Linux command line.
Manipulating Files cp - copy files and directories. mv - move or rename files and directories. rm - remove files and directories. mkdir - create directories.
Swapping contents of two files by using mv command The mv command can be used to rename files and can also be used to move them from one location to another. Here the purpose is to swap two files in the command line, so we using mv command for renaming purposes, not for moving files to other locations.
To unmount a file system in Linux, you use the umount command followed by the directory where it has been mounted. The basic syntax would be, umount /path/to/filesystem .
To edit a text file in a Linux terminal, use a command-line text editor like Nano or Vim. or Vi . Type the editors command followed by the file name, press Enter, make changes, and save. Nano users can use Ctrl + X, while Vim users can use :wq to exit after making the edits in the text file .
