A data contract guarantees interface compatibility and includes terms of service and a service level agreement (SLA). Terms of service outline how data can be used, such as restricting its use to only development, testing, or production. SLAs describe the required quality of data delivery and interface.
The data contract specification defines a YAML format to describe attributes of provided data sets. It is data platform neutral and can be used with any data platform, such as AWS S3, Google BigQuery, Microsoft Fabric, Databricks, and Snowflake.
A data contract is a formal agreement between the users of a source system and the data engineering team that is extracting data for a data pipeline. This data is loaded into a data repository such as a data warehouse where it can be transformed for end users.
With data contracts in the warehouse, we can implement enforcement mechanisms to try to proactively catch and address issues. Specifically, we enforce contracts in two ways: making sure the table/columns can meet the contract in the warehouse and ensuring any changes made to a contract wont break existing consumers.
Use Migration Assistant to transfer your data over a wired or wireless network, or by connecting your old and new computers with an Ethernet cable. On both Macs, open a Finder window, go to Applications, open the Utilities folder, then double-click Migration Assistant and follow the onscreen instructions.
Transfer your data to your new iMac Pro Tip: For best results, make sure your new iMac Pro is running the latest version of macOS. Move from a PC to a Mac. Transfer wirelessly. Tip: For fastest migration, connect your old computer to your iMac Pro with a cable, such as a Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) cable.
In that sense, a data contract is nothing more than an API specification. 50 years of software development has learned that apart from an API description, we also need ownership, documentation and stability guarantees as part of that agreement.
Organizations can use contract data to improve their overall performance by understanding where they are spending money and what kinds of contracts are providing the most value.
