hello my name is jenny byrum and im a lead coposcopist with over 20 years experience [Music] after cervical screening you may be referred for colposcopy where a clinician such as myself will take a closer look at your cervix to determine whether there are any changes in the cells of the cervix if the coposcopist feels that there are some changes in the cells they may take a biopsy a biopsy is when a small piece of tissue is removed from the cervix and helps us to determine whether you will need to have any treatment or not [Music] not all cell changes need to be treated as some cell changes will go back to normal on their own in which case you will either be referred back to your gp for cervical screening or brought back to corposcopy for review in six to 12 months time some cell changes require monitoring or treatment to prevent these cell changes from progressing into cervical cancer over a period of time if that is the case you may be offered different monitoring or treatment opti

Spotting may last up to two days, but the bleeding will become lighter. Avoid sex and dont use a tampon in the two to three days following a Pap smear if youre experiencing bleeding. The additional pressure may cause bleeding to start again or become heavier.
Certain things may interfere with a Pap test including: Menstruation. Use of things, such as vaginal creams, jellies, medicines, or spermicidal foams, for 2 to 3 days before the Pap test, as these substances may alter the pH of the cells or hide abnormal cells.
Avoid intercourse, douching, or using any vaginal medicines or spermicidal foams, creams or jellies for two days before having a Pap smear, as these may wash away or obscure abnormal cells. Try not to schedule a Pap smear during your menstrual period.
Other things can cause cells to look abnormal, including irritation, some infections (such as a yeast infection), growths (such as polyps in the uterus), and changes in hormones that occur during pregnancy or menopause. Although these things may make cervical cells look abnormal, they are not related to cancer.
Sometimes women worry about the discomfort of a pap smear, but there are a couple key things women can do to make it more comfortable. On the day of the pap smear, women can take a dose of ibuprofen. When arriving at the office, women should empty their bladder before the appointment time.
Most of the time, the abnormal cell changes are caused by certain types of human papillomavirus, or HPV. HPV is a sexually transmitted infection. Usually these cell changes go away on their own. But certain types of HPV have been linked to cervical cancer.
Do not use douche, bubble bath, or use vaginal medicine for three days before Pap test. You may shower, but do not tub bathe 24 hours before the Pap test. Inform your clinician about additional medications/conditions that may interfere with an accurate test.
In most cases, an abnormal Pap test is a result of: A human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. A sexually transmitted infection (STI or STD), such as herpes or trichomoniasis. A bacterial or yeast infection. Inflammation in the pelvic area. Normal cellular changes that occur with age.
