ACL surgery is an outpatient procedure, provided there are no complications. Surprisingly, patients can walk 1-2 days after surgery.
How soon you can go back to work depends on your job. If you sit at work, you may be able to go back in 1 to 2 weeks. But if you are on your feet at work, it may take 4 to 6 weeks. If you are very physically active in your job, it may take 4 to 6 months.
Treatment for a failed ACL may require staged procedures, and could involve removing old fixation devices, and possibly bone grafting to correct widened or poorly positioned bone tunnels or sockets. In some cases, a realignment may be necessary so that the knee is in alignment with the rest of the lower body.
Because revision ACL reconstruction is a more difficult operation to perform compared to primary ACL surgery, patients should choose an orthopedic surgeon with ample experience and with whom they feel comfortable. The doctor should take the time to answer all of a patient's questions in nontechnical terms.
Mayo Clinic sports medicine surgeons routinely perform revision surgery for patients who have undergone one or more ACL reconstructions elsewhere, and have published extensively on this topic.
6 Weeks to 3 Months After Surgery As the healing process progresses and your knee continues to grow stronger, you may be allowed to do more low-impact activities such as cycling, swimming, and rowing. By the end of this period, you may be able to resume light jogging if your physical therapist thinks you are ready.
Overall, 29.5% of athletes suffered a second ACL injury within 24 months of returning to activity with 20.5% sustaining an opposite leg injury and 9.0% incurring graft re-tear injury on the same leg. A higher proportion of females (23.7%) suffered an opposite leg injury compared to males (10.5%).
After 2 to 3 weeks, you should be able to walk without crutches. As well as specific exercises, activities that do not put much weight on your knee may also be recommended, such as swimming for fitness and cycling.
Exercises – Week 3 Post-Op ACL Reconstruction Prone Hang. Knee Extension with Band. Quads Tightening. Heel Slide. Heel Prop. Towel Stretch. Quarter Squat.
ACL reconstruction is surgery to reconstruct the ligament in the center of your knee. The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) connects your shin bone (tibia) to your thigh bone (femur). A tear of this ligament can cause your knee to give way during physical activity, most often during side-step or crossover movements.
