Crooks is isolated because of his skin color. As the only black man on the ranch, he is not allowed into the bunkhouse with the others, and he does not associate with them. He combats his loneliness with books and his work, but even he realizes that these things are no substitute for human companionship.
2) What does Crooks say to Lennie about loneliness? Says that loneliness will make you go crazy and make you sick.
George is Lennie's one and only best friend. He is "small and quickwitted, dark of face, with restless eyes and sharp, strong features." Every part of him is defined: small, strong hands, slender arms, a thin and bony nose. A man who keeps to himself, he is slow to trust others but quick to read them.
During their conversation, Lennie reveals the secret about the farm, which Crooks initially thinks Lennie is making up. Crooks also prods Lennie about his relationship with George and scares Lennie by suggesting that George might not come back. The more Crooks presses Lennie, the more Lennie becomes scared and upset.
Crooks promises to work for nothing as long as he can live his life out there without the fear of being put out. Like all the others, he wants a place where he can be independent and have some security. But there is no security for anyone in a prejudiced world, least of all a black stable hand with a crooked back.
During the conversation, Lennie tells Crooks about the dream of owning a farm. Crooks doesn't believe that it will ever happen. He starts to question the relationship between George and Lennie. During this conversation, Crooks asks Lennie what he would do if George got hurt.
George Returns As the white men leave Crooks's bunk, Crooks calls out to Candy and tells him to forget about him coming to work on the farm. Of Mice and Men':' Chapter 4 ends up with Crooks alone in his room, rubbing liniment on his back.
When George says that Curley's wife seems like a "tramp," Lennie responds that he thinks she is "purty," causing George to warn Lennie to keep away from her, just like he's supposed to keep away from Curley.
Candy and Crooks' wish to be involved in the dream Both Candy and Crooks ask to be involved in George and Lennie's dream as a way of trying to escape from the isolation of their difficult lives on the ranch.
George Milton is portrayed as a sharp, quick-tempered man in Of Mice and Men, but evolves into a selfless, caring one. George and Lennie's relationship, described like a master and his dog, is what drives most of the action.
