A department wishing to change the CIP code of its major(s) should complete the CIP Change Request Form and attach the form to the programs CourseLeaf page, along with any supporting documentation. The request must include a letterhead statement from the dean in support of the change.
Part of each course number is an alphabetical prefix that indicates the University school, college, or program (first three letters) and the department (next two letters) in which the course originates.
Colleges use course codes to describe and organize their courses in a way that can be easily understood by both colleges and students (if said students have translation guides, that is).
The one thing to remember about course numbers is that the first digit indicates what level of study your course is. That is likely the only uniform (and truly helpful) piece of information these numbers will provide for you.
A course ID is a unique identifier created for every Mastering course. It contains the course creators last name and five digits.
When you apply for OPT, the DSO ( international student adviser/ Designated school official) will issue you a new I20. It will be of 3 pages and you can find the CIP Code on the third page top next to primary major Check the below screen shot.
Every ten years, NCES updates the CIP to add, remove, and revise programs that reflect changing fields of study. NCES last updated the CIP in 2020.
The first digit of the course number indicates whether a course is a freshman or sophomore level. For example, GOVT 2305 is a sophomore level course, while HIST 1301 is a freshman level course. Sophomore level courses can be taken in your freshman year, and freshman level courses can be taken in your sophomore year.
Courses are designated by two numbers, separated by a colon. The first number refers to the department or area of the course; the second number refers to the specific course. For example, in the course designated 600:111 the 600 refers to the Department of Art and the 111 refers to the course.
Every ten years the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) at the Department of Education (ED) officially revises its list of programs of study for the classification of instructional programs (CIP).
