For example, a minimum loss of 7% of body weight in less than 6 months represents a potentially serious symptom. As the loss or gain approaches 25% of body weight, morbidity and mortality rise more rapidly regardless of the cause.
Clinically docHub weight loss (CWL) is defined as at least a 5% reduction in weight from the baseline level (1), and associated with improvements in cardiometabolic risk factors, such as beneficial changes in lipid profile and insulin sensitivity (1, 2, 3).
Defining clinically meaningful weight loss From here, weight loss of 5% was taken as a generally accepted criterion for clinically meaningful weight loss in the literature, and recommended by current guidelines as a weight loss target for individuals with obesity or overweight with associated complications [12].
Dr Neeta Deshpande, diabetologist and obesity physician, said that ing to the guidelines followed in India, a person is considered overweight when their BMI is between 23 and 25 kg/m2, while a person with a BMI over 27.5 kg/m2 is considered obese.
Why is BMI controversial? BMI has been criticized as being an inaccurate tool. One reason is that a person with lots of muscle and minimal body fat can have the same BMI as a person with obesity who has much less muscle.
Under the new guidelines, people with a BMI of 25 to 29.9 are considered overweight. For example, at 5 feet 3 inches, adults who weighed 141 pounds or more would be overweight, while those who are 5 feet 11 inches would be considered obese at 215 pounds.
Clinically docHub changes in study parameters were defined as 5% weight change, 2 BMI units, 0.5% change in HbA1c, and 30 mg/dL change in blood glucose [26, 27].
BMI is an estimate of body fat and a good gauge of your risk for diseases that can occur with more body fat. The higher your BMI, the higher your risk for certain diseases such as heart disease, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, gallstones, breathing problems, and certain cancers.
