[dogs barking] Im very interested in working together with animal shelters So were looking at improving adoption rates, reducing relinquishment rates, reducing euthanasia rates. And so, all of those are done by bringing the community together, and were looking at programs to improve adoptions through changing the behavior of both dogs and also adopters. We found inside the kennel that it was very important for people that dogs were facing forward. We identified that simply by ringing a bell and pairing that bell with food, and then a potential adopter could come through that shelter with some kind of auditory stimulus like a bell, all the dogs would orient towards this bell. Unfortunately, a lot of the times when people are going into the shelter, theyre really not looking at behavior as much. They really are looking at what the dog looks like. So what breed is it? Is it a puppy? Is it small dog? Large dog? And so there, we dont have a whole lot of flexibility of manipulating h

The 3-3-3 rule represents the phases of a rescue dog or common milestones your new dog or puppy will go through. The 3-3-3 rule is the first 3 days, 3 weeks, and 3 months after bringing your dog home from the shelter.
Whether you rescue an older dog or a puppy, a lot of dogs tend to follow the 3-3-3 rule when getting acclimated: 3 days of feeling overwhelmed and nervous. 3 weeks of settling in. 3 months of building trust and bonding with you.
After 3 months, your dog is now completely comfortable in his home. You have built trust and a true bond with your dog, which gives him a complete sense of security with you. He is set in his routine and will come to expect his dinner at his usual time.
The bottom line is, while dogs may not understand the concept of rescue, they definitely have the ability to recognize their owners through their senses and emotional connection.
The best course of action may involve returning the pet to the animal shelter or rescue organization that you adopted from (some adoption contracts stipulate that you return the pet if things arent going well). If this isnt the case or isnt possible, rehoming the pet yourself may be the best choice.
The bottom line is that its the tone of voice that really counts when you address your pets, not the words you say. So its perfectly fine to change that sound/name to something else, especially if the dog might have negative associations with their given name from their previous home.
After three weeks, many dogs have settled and behave as though they feel like they are home now, but they really dont fit into your routine until about three months have gone by. Give it time.
While there are some cats that automatically adjust to a new home as soon as they get there, most do not. The general rule when adopting any animal is the rule of 3-3-3: three days to decompress, three weeks to learn your routine and three months to start to feel at home.
