Claim Medical Expenses on the Tax Return of Lower Net Income Spouse. You should usually claim the total medical expenses for both you and your spouse or common-law partner on one tax return, because the reduction of 3% of net income will be lower.
Generally, you can deduct on Schedule A (Form 1040) only the amount of your medical and dental expenses that is more than 7.5% of your AGI.
If you itemize your deductions for a taxable year on Schedule A (Form 1040), Itemized Deductions, you may be able to deduct the medical and dental expenses you paid for yourself, your spouse, and your dependents during the taxable year to the extent these expenses exceed 7.5% of your adjusted gross income for the year.
You are allowed to deduct all qualified medical expenses if they are more than the annual adjusted gross income (AGI) limit. The IRS does not have a gross cap on medical deductions because you must itemize all medical expenses and deductible expenses on Form 1040, Schedule A.
This threshold amount for the federal part of your tax return (Schedule 1) is either 3% of your net income as reported on your tax return, or $2,635 in 2023 ($2,759 in 2024), whichever is lower. For example, if your net income on your tax return is $40,000, you can deduct expenses in excess of $1,200.
CRA rules on medical travel You can provide receipts for the services youve received or a document or letter signed by the provider of the medical service. You cannot claim medical travel expenses if you travelled less than 40 kilometres in one direction to receive medical attention.
You can claim medical expenses for any 12-month period ending in 2023 and which have not already been claimed in 2022. For example, for the 2023 tax year, you could claim expenses paid in 2022 and in 2023. You can claim all or a portion of the medical expenses for which youve not been or will not be reimbursed.
Normally, you should only claim the medical expenses deduction if your itemized deductions are greater than your standard deduction (TurboTax can also do this calculation for you).
