Hi, everybody, and welcome. My name is Jen, and Im a career coach at Indeed with over 10 years of experience. I personally work with hundreds of jobseekers from a variety of different roles. Today, Im going to share some advice on one of the most common questions I get asked-- how can I change careers when I have no experience in that field? At the end of the video, Ill share the best place to address a career change in a job application. This is a great way to share your motivations with potential employers to help you land an interview. Lets begin. The first step I recommend when changing careers is to recognize your transferable skills. In all of the years that Ive worked with jobseekers, Ive rarely worked with someone who had no experience. And I notice that its very common for people to discount the transferable skills that they have. Once you submit an application, it is saved in a document for Human Resources to review and cannot be edited. Some healthcare organizations will allow you to apply for a job more than once.
Anything that is not relevant This is tied to tailoring your resume for each job listing. Look through your bullet points and edit or remove anything that is not important for the job you are applying to.
Most employers prefer to have at least two references as part of your application. The character reference may be needed if you only have one previous employer and the employer wants reassurance.
A list of references. While adding references to your resumes is okay, its better to put them on a separate page. Unless the recruiter specifically requested it, dont. Also, remove the References: Available Upon Request line from your resume because its understood that you will.
There is no need to include a reference on your resume. When an employer needs a reference, they will request one or more once they are interested in learning more about you as a potential employee. Its helpful to have a list of references ready to offer the employer as soon as they ask to show your preparedness.
If you discover a major factual error after you apply, its best to resubmit your application. Employers will keep your resume on file even if you are not hired, and they often go back through their records to find candidates for open roles.
You may need a character reference to apply to college or graduate school, earn a certification, join a professional organization or apply for a loan. Some job applications also require personal references, especially ones that require a high level of honesty and integrity.
Career Center Leadership. Even in entry-level positions, most employers look for evidence of leadership qualities. Teamwork. Communication and Interpersonal Skills. Analytical Skills. Dependability and a Strong Work Ethic. Maturity and a Professional Attitude. Adaptability and Flexibility. Good Personality.
