Thirty percent of the potential members of a bargaining unit need to sign cards for an election to occur. Authorization cards generally must have a stated purpose of designating the union as the employees exclusive bargaining representative. Authorization cards are legal documents.
An authorization card is a legal document. A union / UAW must have signed cards from 30% of the employees to seek representation and to request an election.
If you sign a card and later change your mind, you have the right to ask the union for your card back. You may do this by writing to the union. Just state that you do not wish the union to represent you and that you would like the union to return your card.
Whether you wish to sign a union authorization card is completely up to you. It is unlawful for an employer or a union to threaten or coerce any employee to sign a union authorization card, or to misrepresent the purpose of the card.
It is illegal for a union to restrict your right to revoke a union authorization card that you may signed. You may revoke any union authorization card you have signed by simply signing a letter, card, petition, or other document stating that you do not support the union, or that you support another union.
