Extended leaves of absence can range from cases of medical necessity to a sabbatical. Whether or not an employee is entitled to an extended leave of absence will depend on whether it falls under FMLA regulations or your company leave policy.
To write a letter of extension for leave, address it to your supervisor or HR department, clearly stating the current end date of your leave and the proposed extended duration. Provide a valid reason for the extension and express gratitude for their understanding.
If the reason for voluntarily taking a period of leave is without just cause, you will not be paid regular benefits for the entire period of the leave. However, you may still be paid maternity, parental, sickness and compassionate care benefits as long as you qualify for these benefits.
Combining or changing length of leave Two or more family members can take leave at the same time, or one after the other. However, the combined length of the leave cannot exceed 37 weeks within a 52-week period for a child and 17 weeks within a 52-week period for an adult.
Extending leave beyond the first 12 months Employees who have taken 12 months of unpaid parental leave can apply to extend their leave by up to a further 12 months. The total period with the extension cant be more than 24 months from the date of birth or placement of the child.
A leave of absence letter should include the reason for the request and the amount of time youll need away from work, with the date youll stop working, and when you will return. It should also contain your contact information and, if possible, a plan to keep your team on track without you.
Unexpected circumstances, such as a wedding or a medical emergency in the family may require you to extend your leave. In such cases, you should write a leave extension letter and seek permission from your manager for the additional leave period.
