Theres no one-size-fits-all answer to this question, but a good rule of thumb is that most children start learning to ride a bike between three and eight years old. Bear in mind that if you start them too early they might quickly grow out of their first bike.
All bicycles that have 2 tandem wheels that are 20 inches or more in diameter are required to be registered. The permanent registration fee for a bicycle is $15.00 payable to the County Director of Finance.
Its the law in Hawaii that everyone under age 16 must wear a helmet while bicycling, but the reality is everyone is better pro- tected with one on. Violators may be fined up to $40. Make sure your helmet fits well and has the Consumer Product Safety Commission seal of approval. Caution!
E-bike owners are required to be registered and pay a fee of $30 at any city hall satellite location or the state business registration unit in Honolulu. You must at least 18 years old to register. Persons 15 years and older may operate an e-bike if it is registered to a household member.
The minimum age to operate an e-bike is 16. People riding e-bikes may ride in bicycle lanes and on paths, but not on sidewalks. If there is not a bicycle lane, you can ride an e-bike or e-scooter in the lane with traffic.
Young toddlers dont have the motor skills for a balance bike yet, so ride-on toys are best for them until they are 18 months or just turning 2 years old. While cute, tricycles or bikes with training wheels are not good bikes for toddlers.
Do not ride on the sidewalks. It is against the law to ride on the sidewalk in business districts (including Waikiki and Downtown). Those caught violating this law can be subject to a $55 fine.
HOW TO RIDE. Bicyclists are required to ride single file on the roadway but may ride two abreast on bike paths, if the lane is wide enough. Bicyclists are required to slow down and come to a complete stop at stop signs and traffic devices signaling red. Bicyclists must signal when turning or coming to a stop.
