Major Food Allergens Congress passed the Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act of 2004 (FALCPA). This law identified eight foods as major food allergens: milk, eggs, fish, Crustacean shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat, and soybeans.
Pre-packed food must have an ingredients list. Allergenic ingredients must be emphasised in some way every time they appear in the ingredients list. For example, you can list them in bold, contrasting colours or by underlining them.
Signposting allergen information Where allergen information is not provided upfront in writing, signposting a customer to where they can get this information will be required. This should be in a prominent place such as at the till point where they would be giving their food orders, on menu, or on the menu board.
You can provide this information by labelling the allergens contained in individual dishes, or by displaying a sign directing customers to ask staff for allergen information. This information must be visible, clearly legible and easily accessible to the customer.
You must update this information every time you get a delivery or shop for ingredients, to make sure your allergen information is accurate. This is not a one-off task. It needs to be a living, working document.
These major food allergens make up 90% of food allergic reactions in the United States: Milk. Eggs. Fish (e.g., bass, flounder, cod) Crustacean shellfish (e.g., crab, lobster, shrimp) Tree nuts (e.g., almonds, walnuts, pecans) Peanuts. Wheat. Soybeans.
Milk. Cows milk allergy is the most common food allergy among children. Eggs. Egg allergies affect about 2% of children, although 70% of those children will likely outgrow their allergy by the time they are 16. Peanuts. Tree Nuts. Fish. Crustaceans (Shellfish) Wheat. Soy.
The allergens food source must be declared at least once on the food label in one of two ways. The name of the food source of a major food allergen must appear: In parentheses following the name of the ingredient. Immediately after or next to the list of ingredients in a contains statement.
The information must be provided clearly on all foodstuffs, including pre-packed and non-pre-packed food. Pre-packed food must have an ingredients list present on the packaging. For loose foods the information should be clearly displayed on the menu, for example.
Providing allergen information its the law Consumers have a legal right to receive written or verbal information on allergen content if they ask for it when buying food. This is a requirement of the Food Act 2001 and the Food Standards Code.
