Encrypt a PDF or PDF Portfolio with a certificate For a single PDF or a component PDF in a PDF Portfolio, open the PDF. Choose Tools Protect More Options Encrypt with Certificate. At the prompt, click Yes. In the Certificate Security Settings dialog box, select the document components to encrypt.
A certificate stores the public key component of a digital ID. For more information about digital IDs, see Digital IDs. When you secure a PDF using a certificate, you specify the recipients and define the file access level for each recipient or group.
When using certificate encryption, the PDF file is still protected using a password (for example if AES 256-bit encryption is used then a random 32-character password is used to protect the PDF document), but that password is encrypted using the recipients public key. Only the corresponding private key can decrypt it.
Forgot the PDF password and you need to open the file. Open the locked document with Microsoft Word. In the tabs, click on Review. Then select Restrict editing Stop Protection. It will show a dialogue box to input the password and put in the password. Click on Unprotect document, then click OK.
