Between 1940 and 1960, the amount of mail doubled in The United States. Thats largely because companies began using computers to send automated mailings. Soon, the flood of mail sent by banks, advertisers, and other businesses was overwhelming postal workers. The Postal Service needed a solution. In 1963, the Zone Improvement Plan divided the country into ten regions and assigned five digits increasing in specificity, from region, to large sorting centers, to smaller post offices. Where previously mail workers had to figure out which post office went with which address, now the zip code provided that information for them. The government promoted the new system with a cartoon character, Mr. ZIP, and a song from a zip-code lovin band called The Swingin Six. You know youve gotta have a zip code on the envelope, a zip code so you wont just have to hope. A zip code morning, noon and night, and everything will be alright. And it worked by 1969, 83% of Americans were using zip codes,

Some variables, such as social security numbers and zip codes, take numerical values, but are not quantitative: They are qualitative or categorical variables.
Examples of nominal variables include region, postal code, and religious affiliation. Ordinal . A variable can be treated as ordinal when its values represent categories with some intrinsic ranking (for example, levels of service satisfaction from highly dissatisfied to highly satisfied).
Nominal Variables : All nouns are nominal variables and come under discrete. That says, names of sales managers (people), geographies, countries, states and cities, even the addresses and zip codes (places), products and flowers (things) are discrete.
If you want your data to appear exactly as entered, youll need to use the text number format. This format is especially good for numbers you dont want to perform calculations with, such as phone numbers, zip codes, or numbers that begin with 0: for example, 02415.
Nominal variables are also called categorical variables or factors. Nominal variables may be represented by numbers. If so, these numbers are used merely as labels and are not subjected to arithmetic operations. Zip Code is a nominal variable whose values are represented by numbers.
Classifying residents ing to zip codes is also an example of the nominal level of measurement. Even though numbers are assigned as zip codes, there is no meaningful order or ranking.
Zip codes are an example of ratio data.
Based on the above definitions, we decide that a US postal ZIP code is a nominal variable because it is not quantitative data that can have arithmetic operations done on it, so it cannot be discrete or continuous. It also cannot be put in a progressive order, so it is not ordinal.
There are four primary types of ZIP codes: PO Box, Unique, Military, and Standard.
Postcodes too are classified as categorical data, rather than numerical data. Despite consisting of numbers, a postcode represent a category, or region. A continuous variable is a variable that has an infinite number of possible values, within a range. In other words, any value is possible for the variable.
