The FCC requires a GMRS (General Mobile Radio Service) license as a way to regulate frequencies that are used by two‑way radio devices. Before operating a GMRS radio, a consumer must have a valid license. The FCC licenses certain frequencies, such as AM/FM broadcasts, radio spectrums, and cell phone frequencies.
The following licenses are issued for the holders lifetime: Restricted Radiotelephone Operator Permit. Restricted Radiotelephone Operator Permit-Limited Use. Marine Radio Operator Permit. The license term for a new or renewed grant is 10 years and a copy must be kept with the aircrafts station records. You may file for renewal beginning 90 days prior to the expiration date of your license.
This includes public safety, commercial and non-commercial fixed and mobile wireless services, broadcast television and radio, satellite and other services.
License Expirations FCC licenses are typically good for 10 years. Each license has an expiration date on it.
You may take the exam at home, at work, or anywhere you have an undisturbed space that our remote proctor can observe via your webcam. See our Online Examination Requirements here. Your $90 nonrefundable exam fee covers the exam, the remote proctor expense, and filing your proof of passing certificate with the FCC.
No. The FCC must authorize the assignment or transfer of control of the FCC-issued licenses.
How to Obtain a License. Submit FCC Form 605 along with the appropriate Proof of Passing Certificates to apply. (You do NOT need to submit FCC Form 159 (fee processing form) or any fees.) Many Commercial Operator License Examination Managers (COLEMs) file these documents for applicants who test with them.
The most popular types of personal radio services are Citizens Band Radio Service, Family Radio Service, General Mobile Radio Service, Low-Power Radio Service and Multi-Use Radio Service. Of these types of services, only General Mobile Radio Service requires an FCC license to operate.
