An abnormal result means that cell changes were found on your cervix. This usually does not mean that you have cervical cancer. Abnormal changes on your cervix are likely caused by HPV. The changes may be minor (low-grade) or serious (high-grade). Most of the time, minor changes go back to normal on their own.
If you have inflammation or minor cell changes, your doctor may take a wait and see approach. They may suggest you have another Pap test in a few months. If the abnormal cells havent cleared up by then, your doctor may order more tests. These might include a procedure called a colposcopy.
The only sure way to find out if you have cervical cancer is to get a screening test (a Pap test and/or an HPV test). If you are a woman who has not had her cervix removed by surgery (a hysterectomy), keep getting tested until you are at least 65 years old.
A normal Pap smear shows healthy squamous cells (flat cells that look like fish scales) from the surface of the cervix. There are no signs of infection and no abnormal cells. Even if your Pap results are healthy, you should be tested regularly.
Inflammation on a Pap smear can be found in a patient of any age and may be attributable to a benign infectionsuch as Candida vaginitisthat need be treated only if the patient is symptomatic. Sexually transmitted infections can also cause an inflammatory reaction on the cervix and should be treated ingly.
Inflammation. If inflammation (redness) is present in the cells on the Pap smear, it means that some white blood cells were seen on your Pap smear. Inflammation of the cervix is common and usually does not mean there is a problem.
Inflammation often causes a mildly abnormal Pap test. An inflamed cervix may look red, irritated, or eroded. Some of the common causes of cervical inflammation are: Bacteria (from an infection), yeast or monilia infections, or trichomonas infections.
Antibiotics successfully treat cervicitis in most cases. For other cases, laser therapy or surgery may be required.During your appointment, your healthcare provider will check for: Any redness on your cervix. Discharge. Blood on your vagina or cervix. Inflammation of the vaginal walls.
