Fryettes Principles of Spinal Motion (also known as Fryettes Laws) were first proposed by Harrison Fryette, DO, in 1918. Fryette found certain relationships between vertebral motion in three planes: flexion/extension, rotation, and sidebending.
The second law describes how in either flexion or extension the spine will choose type II motion, which is lateral flexion and rotation in the same direction, i.e. right lateral flexion and right rotation. The third law was added about 30 years after the original 2 were written and applies to the whole spine.
Principle II: When the spine is in a flexed or extended position (non-neutral), sidebending to one side will be accompanied by rotation to the same side. This law is observed in type II somatic dysfunction, where only one vertebral segment is restricted in motion and becomes much worse on flexion or extension.
Patients with type I motion demonstrate movement such that, when side bending is initiated, rotation occurs to the op- posite side. This motion is considered normal. Those with type II motion dem- onstrate rotation to the same side when side bending is initiated.
The movements possible at the spine include flexion, extension, lateral flexion and rotation.
Stills Technique is both an indirect and direct technique where the physician first places the affected segment in a position of ease and then applies a compressive vector force in order to move the segment into the direct barrier.
Six-degrees-of-freedom kinematics between adjacent vertebrae (three translations: medial-lateral, superior-inferior, and anterior-posterior; three rotations: flexion-extension, twist, and lateral bend) were calculated for every frame in each trial in ance with established standards for reporting spine kinematics
When the spine is in neutral, sidebending to one side will be accompanied by horizontal rotation to the opposite side. This law is observed in type I somatic dysfunction, where more than one vertebrae are out of alignment and cannot be returned to neutral by flexion or extension of the vertebrae.
