Starting a freelance work relationship without a contract is a mistake. Having a contract is in your best interest and your clients, and there are many benefits of having one. A contract is a legally binding agreement between two or more parties.
If your contract doesnt have a termination clause or you didnt sign a contract, you technically do not have to give notice as a freelancer. However, I would highly recommend giving at least two weeks notice in most situations, even if youre not contractually obligated to do so.
For most freelancers the road is paved with creative inspiration and remote freedom, but for some unsuspecting solopreneurs, theres legal trouble lurking. Its not uncommon for clients and even third parties to sue freelancers over their work.
Provide Plenty of Notice Even if there isnt a notice period outlined in your contract, providing a little heads-up before walking away is still the respectful thing to do. Sticking with a two weeks notice the way you would in a traditional job is a safe way to go.
You need to explainin unmistakable termsthat you no longer plan to work on their projects. So, rather than saying something like, I dont know if this is the right fit for me anymore, you should remove the uncertain language and state, This project is no longer the right fit for me, so I need to move on.
If you and your freelancer agree to end a project that is in progress, or if you no longer need the work done, you have the option to cancel your project. You can only do this if there are no pending Milestone Payments and invoices.
Unlike an employee, a freelancer has the freedom to complete different jobs simultaneously given there is no exclusive contract between the freelancer and the client. A freelancer is still required to pay income taxes and the self-employment tax mandated by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).
