When a new file is saved to your system, Spotlight indexes it. This is a process that occurs in the background when its just a few files. It doesnt take long however, if you add lots of new files to your system you might see the Indexing bar in Spotlight.
Open System Preferences Spotlight Privacy, and then drag your drive (or the drive on which Spotlight isnt finding files) into the list of locations that Spotlight shouldnt search. That deletes the old Spotlight index.
Spotlight is a selection-based search system, which creates an index of all items and files on the system. It is designed to allow the user to quickly locate a wide variety of items on the computer, including documents, pictures, music, applications, and System Settings.
Click the Spotlight icon in the menu bar, enter a keyword to search, and you will find a progress bar indicating Spotlight is indexing.
On your Mac, choose Apple menu System Settings, then click Siri Spotlight in the sidebar. (You may need to scroll down.) Go to Search results on the right, and in the list, deselect the Siri Suggestions checkbox.
Launch System Preferences, and then select the Spotlight preference pane. Select the Privacy tab. The Privacy tab holds a list of volumes and folders that have had indexing turned off. Add a volume to the list, and the indexing process is turned off; no new indexing is performed for that volume.
If your Mac slows down randomly, it could be trying to index too many files. The built-in Spotlight tool allows you to search for any apps, files, and folders on your Mac. But since it scans all the files in your external hard drives, Time Machine backups, and more, Spotlight can slow your Mac down.
Click the Spotlight icon in the menu bar, enter a keyword to search, and you will find a progress bar indicating Spotlight is indexing.
