one common misconception is if somebody is a do not resuscitate then we stop treating them completely do not resuscitate means if somebodys heart stops beating on its own then we do not push on their chest we do not shock their heart we just let them die peacefully if somebody comes to the hospital and has say pneumonia and needs a course of antibiotics and they tell us that they are do not resuscitate that means that we give them the appropriate treatment up until the point that their heart stops if you do not want to be resuscitated or treated for a medical condition you have to be clear with your physician and your care team what exactly your wishes are

The main point is this: as a bystander, i.e. a non-medical professional, you cannot get into any legal trouble for giving CPR to a person with a DNR, and should always give CPR as soon as possible to all victims of sudden cardiac arrest.
A DNR order is allowed for any reason. Any adult can request a DNR, including healthy adults. People most likely to use them are those who know in advance that their chance of surviving CPR is very low and/or they dont want to spend their last days on life support.
Yes, a DNR order can be revoked. A DNR order can be signed by an individual, or their legally-recognized health care agent. If you wish to cancel your DNR order, simply notify your attending physician. They are required to remove the order from your medical record.
DNR means, Do Not Resuscitate, or, do not attempt to restart a heart or breathing once they have stopped.
In summary, the minimum requirement in order for a DNR form to be valid is the valid signature and date of the patient, or of their legally recognized healthcare agent in the event that they are incapacitated or otherwise unable to express their wishes. Second, the form must be signed off by the attending physician.
DNR protocols typically require the signing of an out-of-hospital DNR order by both the physician and patient (or the patients surrogate) and the use of a special identifier (eg, a bracelet or brightly colored form) that is worn by or kept near the patient.
DNR discussions occur too infrequently and patients preferences regarding resuscitation are neglected. DNR discussions are delayed until it is too late for the patients to participate in decisions regarding resuscitation. Physicians do not provide adequate information to allow patients to make informed decisions.
Generally, a DNR order should not be entered into the patients medical record without concurrence of the parents. However, a DNR order may be entered by the patients physician without parental permission if CPR is determined to be physiologically futile or non-therapeutic, in ance with Paragraphs E and F below.
You may think that signing a Do Not Resuscitate (DNR) order is a great idea since it will prevent this from occurring. However, it turns out that a DNR can potentially harm you (or a loved one) by leading doctors and nurses to provide less care, even when you are not in a coma or close to death.
The main point is this: as a bystander, i.e. a non-medical professional, you cannot get into any legal trouble for giving CPR to a person with a DNR, and should always give CPR as soon as possible to all victims of sudden cardiac arrest.
