If you create an AMI from an EC2 instance, you can terminate the instance and create a new one from the AMI. If you have taken a snapshot of the EBS boot volume the instances is using, you will need to register it as an AMI before you can create a new instance.
After you purchase a Reserved Instance, you cannot cancel your purchase. However, you might be able to modify, exchange, or sell your Reserved Instance if your needs change.
To delete terminated EC2 Instances, locate the instance you want to delete in the EC2 Console under the Instances page. Click on the instance and select the Terminate option. Once youve selected terminate, you will receive a pop-up confirmation. Click yes to confirm.
By default, Amazon EBS root device volumes are automatically deleted when the instance terminates. However, by default, any additional EBS volumes that you attach at launch, or any EBS volumes that you attach to an existing instance persist even after the instance terminates.
To turn termination protection on or off for a running cluster using the AWS CLI. To enable termination protection on a running cluster with the AWS CLI, use the modify-cluster-attributes command with the --termination-protected parameter. To disable it, use the --no-termination-protected parameter.
Stopped instances dont incur charges, but Elastic IP addresses or EBS volumes attached to those instances do. To disassociate an Elastic IP address from an instance, see Disassociate an Elastic IP address. For information on releasing an unattached Elastic IP address, see Release an Elastic IP address.
Underutilized and Idle EC2 Instances AWS EC2 instances are charged by time usage. As such, if a running EC2 instance is using less than its capacity, or even worse, sitting idle and not being used at all, you will continue to be charged for the instance.
The key difference between stopping and terminating an instance is that the attached bootable EBS volume will not be deleted. The data on your EBS volume will remain after stopping while all information on the local (ephemeral) hard drive will be lost as usual.
An EBS volume is off-instance storage that can persist independently from the life of an instance. You continue to pay for the volume usage as long as the data persists.
When you stop an instance, the following is lost: Data stored in the RAM. Data stored in the instance store volumes. The public IPv4 address that Amazon EC2 automatically assigned to the instance on launch or start.
