To cancel your EIN and close your IRS business account, you need to send us a letter that includes: The complete legal name of the business. The business EIN. The business address. The reason you wish to close the account.
An IRS letter 147c, also known as an EIN verification letter, is a letter the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) sends a company when it has lost or misplaced its Employer Identification Number (EIN) and needs to confirm what it is.
Regardless of whether or not an EIN was ever used, the number is PERMANENT. The IRS cannot cancel EIN numbers; however, the business account associated with the EIN may be closed. If the EIN is needed in the future, it will still belong to the business entity even after the account is closed.
To request your EIN Verification Letter, youll need to complete Form SS-4, Application for Employer Identification Number, which is available on the IRS website or through their office. Once completed, you can submit the form to the IRS either online, by mail, fax, or in person.
To close their business account, a sole proprietor needs to send the IRS a letter that includes the complete legal name of their business, the EIN, the business address and the reason they wish to close their account.
Simply call (800) 829-4933 and select EIN from the list of options. Once connected with an IRS employee, tell the assistor you received an EIN from the Internet but cant remember it. The IRS employee will ask the necessary disclosure and security questions prior to providing the number.
The IRS sends out an EIN confirmation letter for every EIN application it processes. This EIN confirmation letter is called CP 575, and the IRS only mails the letter to the mailing address listed on line 4 of the SS-4 application. Unfortunately, you cannot get a copy of the IRS EIN confirmation letter online.
