Factual accuracy is essential. Opinion should be labeled as such and facts should be provided to support that opinion. Letters of recommendation should be dated and addressed specifically to the party concerned; avoid using the To Whom It May Concern address.
In contexts like academic admissions or job applications, the date on the letter ensures that the recommendation is in sync with specific application cycles, highlighting its currency and, by extension, its reliability.
Generally, organizations and institutions do not want to see letters of recommendation that are dated more than a year out.
All of the recommendations should be submitted or postmarked by the deadline date. However, some schools may be more lenient with school officials. You should contact the school to see if they accept recommendations later than the stated deadline.
Just send them an e-mail back letting them know about the issue. Probably they have sent out multiple letters whilst forgetting to update the date, so they might be happy to be notified so they can correct it for everyone.
Some recommenders may wish to write an updated letter when you apply in a subsequent reporting year or to a different type of program. A recommender may decide to rescind a letter after becoming aware that it has been repurposed, if permission to reuse the letter has not been requested and granted.
Validity of Reference Letters The fact that a letter is undated doesnt necessarily make it invalid, particularly if the letter writer noted the dates or time frame during which they worked together. It is ultimately up to the hiring manager to decide how much credence to give the letter during the hiring process.
