The Rich Text Format (often abbreviated RTF) is a proprietary document file format with published specification developed by Microsoft Corporation from 1987 until 2008 for cross-platform document interchange with Microsoft products. Most word processors are able to read and write some versions of RTF.
An RTF file consists of unformatted text, control words, control symbols, and groups. For ease of transport, a standard RTF file can consist of only 7-bit ASCII characters. (Converters that communicate with Microsoft Word for Windows or Microsoft Word for the Macintosh should expect 8-bit characters.)
Unicode RTF. Word 2000 is a Unicode-enabled application. Text is handled using the 16-bit Unicode character encoding scheme. Expressing this text in RTF requires a new mechanism, because until this release (version 1.6), RTF has only handled 7-bit characters directly and 8-bit characters encoded as hexadecimal.
An RTF command consists of a backslash, then some characters a-z, and then an optional positive or negative integer argument. The command is then terminated either by a space, return, or linefeed (all of which are ignored), or by some character (like brace or backslash, etc.)
RTF SYNTAX.
You can open RTF files in almost any text editor or word processor. Use default programs like WordPad or TextEdit to open rich-text files by double-clicking on them. Alternatively, upload RTFs to Google Drive to open them from anywhere including a computer or your phone.
A Plain Text content control will be inserted into the form and does not allow users to format the data, whereas Rich Text allows users to format the text theyve entered.
RTF files are encoded using the American Standard Code for Information Interchange (ASCII) standard, which makes them easy to transfer between different computers and OSes. ASCII is a standard code that represents characters using numbers, and it is the most common encoding used for text files.
While RTF is most often used when exchanging documents between different word processing programs or operating systems, you can also use it to transfer documents between different versions of the same word processor.
The \pard means to reset the paragraph-formatting attributes to their default value, instead of inheriting them (or some of them!) from the previous paragraph. The \par means to end the current paragraph.
