How often should a Pap smear be repeated? Doctors generally recommend repeating Pap testing every three years for women ages 21 to 65. Women age 30 and older can consider Pap testing every five years if the procedure is combined with testing for HPV.
Women eligible for discharge from colposcopy who have normal, ASCUS or LSIL cytology and a negative HPV test are at average risk and should be screened every 3 years.
Atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASCUS) cells, occurring in organized cytological screening, may be either high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) positive or negative.
WHAT CAUSES AN ABNORMAL PAP SMEAR RESULT? HPV, Human Papiloma Virus, causes abnormal Pap smear results because HPV is a virus which infects skin cells. When subclinical HPV infects the skin cells in the cervix (skin cells on the cervix are called squamous cells), it causes the cells to change and become abnormal.
CONCLUSION: How to treat an ASCUS (Atypical Squamous Cells of Undetermined Significance) Pap test has been a major source of anxiety for patients and physicians. Most mild cervical abnormalities go away without treatment.
If the HPV test is negative, you can return to your regular screening schedule. If the HPV test is positive, you should repeat the Pap test in one year.
One of the most common abnormal findings is something called atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance, or ASCUS. ASCUS doesnt mean that you have or will ever get cancer, but it signifies that there have been changes in cells that require further investigation and monitoring.
A finding of abnormal cells in the tissue that lines the outer part of the cervix. ASCUS is the most common abnormal finding in a Pap test. It may be a sign of infection with certain types of human papillomavirus (HPV) or other types of infection, such as a yeast infection.
