- Whats up, my friend? Abbie here, and welcome back to WritersLife Wednesdays, where we come together to help you make your story matter and make your author dreams come true. Writing chapter one is easier said than done. If you are a writer embarking on a new story, you know how terrifying it is to stare at that first blank page. You know that this is a critical moment. This first page is either going to make or break your book. This is going to be a readers first impression of your writing, and what they see on this first page is going to determine whether or not they continue reading the story. Its a lot of pressure. I dont know about you, but I am a very picky reader. When I go book shopping, I like to take my time browsing, looking at everything, and sometimes, if a cover jumps out at me, Ill pick up a book, see what its about, read the description, and if I am intrigued by the description, I will start reading the book itself. I will sit down and start reading it for five m

How to Know When to End a Chapter Location change: Is your main character moving to a new place or time? Point of view change: If youre telling your story from more than one characters point of view, youll generally want to stick to one POV per chapter, to avoid confusing your reader.
Chapter length averages On average, chapters tend to range from 1,000-5,000 words, with most falling in the 2,000-4,000 range. But chapters can be much longer or much shorter. There are plenty of bestselling books where some chapters are only a page and some where they dont even use chapters in the traditional sense.
For scene breaks within a chapter, insert one line with three asterisks centered. Dont use underlines or boldface anywhere in the text of your story. Use italics sparingly.
There are two main ways to end a chapter: End with a cliffhanger. Cliffhangers pose big questions at the end of a chapter or section. End at a natural pause. If youre not writing a cliffhanger ending, stop at the moment youve fulfilled your narrative promise to the reader.
But if you want more than luck, read these tips for how to start a novel and avoid some frequent pitfalls! Starting 10 pages before the beginning. Not introducing your main character. Introducing too many characters. Not creating conflict. Starting with summary. Burying the Reader in Info. Making the reader feel dumb.
Any chapter that doesnt further the overall story in some way should be cut. This means that every chapter has a little part of the story to tell. And as soon as the chapter has told its part of the story, it should end.
In the end, the best way to know when your chapter is over is when it feels right to you. There should be a sense of completion something got done but leave the reader wanting to go on to the next. With practice, feedback, and patience, youll eventually develop a feel for when its time to start Chapter 2.
A reader should walk away with a feeling that the story is complete. 2. Transformation: A storys ending should bring a powerful close to your character development. The main character has learned valuable lessons along the way and the ending should illustrate their transformation.
