Absolutely bank and credit card statements are acceptable as proof of payment for expenses; just as are actual receipts or invoices from the suppliers and service providers.
For deductions that do require receipts, can you use bank statements instead? Bank and credit card statements can provide some documentation for tax credits and deductions, but theyre usually not sufficient on their own. These statements dont show all the details that the IRS requires: Payee.
The short answer is YES. The IRS accepts credit card statements as proof of tax write-offs (here are the best apps to track receipts for taxes).
Your supporting documents should identify the payee, the amount paid, proof of payment, the date incurred, and include a description of the item purchased or service received that shows the amount was for a business expense.
They require any form of acceptable proof such as receipts, bank statements, credit card statements, cancelled checks, bills or invoices from suppliers and service providers. Without the appropriate documentation, the IRS wont allow your deductions.
Documents for purchases include the following: Canceled checks or other documents reflecting proof of payment/electronic funds transferred. Cash register tape receipts. Credit card receipts and statements.
There are four internal control measures for cash. They are employee background checks, use of written protocols, separation of duties, and securing assets and cash in safe locations.
The IRS does provide an exception to keeping records (actual receipts) for any expense, other than lodging, that is less than $75. Your policy may include the use of per diem allowances for meal and/or lodging expenses during travel.
