While typeface designs themselves are not protected, the computer software that enables the use of fonts is eligible for copyright protection. This includes the font files (e.g., TrueType or OpenType files) and any software code associated with font rendering and hinting.
The license itself is a document that explicitly states what users can and cant do with the font files. Whether fonts are sold or given away for free, each has an associated license (and you should have a copy of the license for each font you have a copy of.)
Most fonts come in a zipped folder, and most of these will have a readme. txt file within that folder. If you are unsure about the license of your font, the best place to look is in that readme file. It may also be labeled as license.
Free commercially licensed serif fonts: Arrow. RM Almanac. Chanticleer Roman NF Regular. Dustismo Roman Bold. Bona Nova. Alegreya. Amethysta Regular. Old Standard TT.
Generally, copyright law in the U.S. does not protect typefaces. Fonts may be protected as long as the font qualifies as computer software or a program (in fact, most fonts are programs or software). Bitmapped fonts are considered computerized representations of a typeface (and are not protected by copyright law).
FONTS FOR COMMERCIAL USE In many cases, if you intend to use a font for commercial purposes, you will likely have to purchase a specific license for that font, unless the font documentation explicitly states you can use it for free commercially.
Each font file is a separate piece of software that needs to be properly licensed. Fonts are made by the human hand, painstakingly drawn over months or sometimes years, and engineered to perform perfectly.
