Rules to Help Make Text Better Use No More Than Three Typefaces. Standard Fonts Are Better Than Decorative Ones. Contrasting Font Pair. Use Left Alignment. Line Length. Balance Line Height, Size and Line Length. Divide Text Into Paragraphs. Create a Visual Hierarchy.
Summary of key rules | Buttericks Practical Typography. The four most important typographic considerations for body text are point size, line spacing, line length, and font (see font recommendations), because those choices determine how the body text looks.
The first rule of typography is to minimize the number of typefaces and fonts being used throughout your site. Getting carried away with various fonts and sizes is easy to do, especially when trying to distinguish pieces of information for your reader.
Theyre intended for emphasis and if everything (i.e.: a whole paragraph) is all caps/bold/italic, nothing is emphasized. Italicization is used for gentle emphasis, bold is used for heavier emphasis. All caps are another alternative means of emphasis. None of these should be used on more than a few words together.
There are five basic classifications of typefaces: serif, sans serif, script, monospaced, and display. As a general rule, serif and sans serif typefaces are used for either body copy or headlines (including titles, logos, etc.), while script and display typefaces are only used for headlines.
Three major sections make up a visual hierarchy of text. These are the headline, subheading, and body which make the design more visually appealing and easier to navigate. This allows readers to scan quickly for relevant information. This classic typographic design idea can be used in any type of design.
Unless you have a specific reason, align type to the left axis. We read left to right. Thus, when we meet new text, regardless of its purpose, were going to naturally progress through said text from left to right. And for that matter, top to bottom.
In general, you should only use a maximum of three fonts per design: the title, the subhead, and the body of the text. You get an exception if your design text is long.
