As a standard font for legal documents, Times New Roman (along with Arial and Helvetica) is one of the most commonly used fonts.
Bold is one of the most common weights of a typeface, always with a heavier stroke than the regular/upright version. Bold is commonly used for emphasis.
Bold, italics, and all caps should be used sparingly. Theyre intended for emphasis and if everything (i.e.: a whole paragraph) is all caps/bold/italic, nothing is emphasized. Italicization is used for gentle emphasis, bold is used for heavier emphasis. All caps are another alternative means of emphasis.
Bold strongly stands out from regular text, and is often used to highlight keywords important to the texts content. For example, printed dictionaries often use boldface for their keywords, and the names of entries can conventionally be marked in bold.
All typed and printed matter must appear in either a proportionately spaced typeface of 14 points or more or a monospaced typeface of no more than 10.5 characters per inch. Text shall be in roman (preferably Times New Roman) upright letters non-script type.
While theres no one official font style for preparing legal documents, there are a few court-approved fonts that are considered most easily readable: Arial. Century (and Century-related fonts like Century Schoolbook) Verdana. docHub Caslon Pro. docHub Sabon.
But why did the courts decide to be anti-Garamond now? Theories have abounded: As Merrick Garland traded his post as head circuit judge for attorney general last week, people wondered if Garlands exit and Garamonds ousting were at all related. Was Garland a secret Garamond tyrant, forcing the font on the courts?
Both the Supreme Court and the Solicitor General use Century. Professional typographers set books in New Baskerville, Book Antiqua, Calisto, Century, Century Schoolbook, Bookman Old Style and many other proportionally spaced serif faces. Any face with the word book in its name is likely to be good for legal work.
