No, it is not strictly necessary to use boldface for vectors and matrices in mathematics. However, it is a common convention in many mathematical disciplines to use boldface letters to denote vectors and matrices, particularly in physics and engineering.
The \boldmath declaration switches to a bold math italic font; this causes letters, numbers, and most symbols used in math mode to be set in a bold type. (In LaTeX2e everything in the formula is set in a bold font.) The \unboldmath declaration switches back to the normal math italic font.
The standard typographic approach for showing the vector is lower case, upright boldface font, as in v. The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) suggests using a bold italic serif, such as v, or a non-bold italic serif with a right arrow emphasis.
Vectors are denoted by boldface lowercase letters (such as a,b). To indicate their dimensions, we use notation like a Rn. The ith element of a is written as ai or a(i). We denote the constant vector of one as 1 (with its dimension implied by the context).
To use bold-face for vectors in TeX, you can either use the \mathbf command or the \boldsymbol command. Both will produce bold vectors, but the \boldsymbol command is more commonly used as it preserves the italic nature of vectors.
In printed works, such as text books, it is common practice to use bold face to indicate that a symbol, such as v, represents a vector. In written work, where bold face is not available, the symbols representing vectors are underlined.
The basic command is \bm which may be used to make the math expression in its argument be typeset using bold fonts. The syntax of \bm is: \bm{⟨math expression⟩} So $\alpha \not= \bm{\alpha}$ produces ̸= .
The Alias \boldsymbol. The package offers an alias of \bm, and thats the \boldsymbol command. Its intended to allow for a faster migration of documents using the command \boldsymbol from the AMS package amsbsy. The difference between the two is that the command from the bm package is better at spacing.
