Sealing Pressure Treated Wood However, if you want to maximize the natural look and warmth of the wood, you can skip the stain and apply a clear or lightly tinted sealer to add waterproofing and, depending on the sealer, UV protection to help prevent fading.
Know When To Stain Due to the nature of the pressure-treating process, where water forces chemical preservatives into the wood, it can take up to several weeks for the lumber to dry out. If the lumber is kiln-dried, it can be painted or stained immediately; if not, you may have to wait a little longer.
To achieve the hardwood finish youre after, we would recommend using the Merbau stain on the treated pine. The rich colour will offer a sense of beautiful quality while still showing the authentic wood grain through the stain.
There are a few options for staining pressure-treated wood. One is to use a semi-transparent deck stain, which will allow some of the woods natural grain to show through. Another is to use a solid-color deck stain, which will provide a more uniform look.
You just cant go wrong using Early American stain on your pine paneling and trims. Oil-based stains, such as Minwax Wood Finish, enhances pines grain and colors and can do it with just one heavy coat. Apply first in a thin coat if you want a lighter color and add another for a darker shade.
1-2 hours before recoat. Wait 24-48 hours before light foot traffic. 72 hours for full cure. Additional dry time may be needed in cooler temperatures and higher humidity.
Varathane penetrating stains: Varathane oil-based stain dries in two to four hours, and water-based in two. Allow a few more hours if sealing a water-based stain with an oil-based clear finish, and vice-versa. Gel stains: Because they often feature an oil or varnish base, gel stains take more time to dry.
What is the best stain to use on pressure treated pine? Timber Oil deep penetrating stain is a great choice for new and aged pressure treated pine wood. New pine should be cleaned and brightened before staining. The Brown Sugar or Amaretto colors usually look best on pressure treated pine.
