The ACL or Anterior Cruciate Ligament, is one of two ligaments inside the knee joint. Together, the ACL and PCL or Posterior Cruciate Ligament, stabilize the knee. The ACL travels from the back to the front of the knee joint and is connected to the femur and the tibia. The ACL plays an important role when you perform activities in sports that require changing direction. When the leg and body change direction, the ACL holds the femur and tibia together. If the knee receives too much stress, the ACL could be sprained or completely torn. Without the ACL, the tibia can now move forward freely, making the knee less stable. To confirm the degree of your ACL injury, the experts the the Sports Medicine Center at Childrens Hospital Colorado will perform a physical exam and use imaging like X-ray and MRI. If surgery is required, Childrens Hospital Colorado specializes in surgical techniques that repair the ACL while protecting the growth plates around the knee. Growth plates determine the

Treatment for MDACL usually starts non-surgically with anti-inflammatory drugs and physiotherapy. Surgical treatment involves arthroscopic debridement of ACL, with partial or total resection, occasionally combined with ACL reconstruction.
When you've torn your ACL you will lose a range of motion. Try bending your knee and then straightening it out. If you can't bend your knee to a 90 degree angle or straighten out your leg because of pain, stiffness and swelling, then it is likely that you've torn your ACL. Set an appointment with your doctor.
Loss of Range of Motion It will be very difficult to move the lower section of the leg due to swelling that occurs after the tear. This will result in restricted motion at the joint. In many cases, walking will be difficult, and assistive devices such as a walker, crutches or stick may be required to walk straight.
ACL Strengthening Walking Lunges - Lunges strengthen the thigh muscles (quadriceps). Hamstring Leans - These strengthen the muscles in the back of the thigh. Single Toe Raises - You use your toes (not one toe) while the other leg is raised by bending the knee.
The ACL has a microstructure of collagen bundles of multiple types (mostly type I) and a matrix made of a network of proteins, glycoproteins, elastic systems, and glycosaminoglycans with multiple functional interactions.
The midsubstance of the ligament has a rounded or elliptical cross-section, with an oval isthmus and larger insertion areas, so the ACL also has been described as having the shape of an hourglass55 or a bow tie56.
Medical treatment for an ACL injury begins with several weeks of rehabilitative therapy. A physical therapist will teach you exercises that you will perform either with continued supervision or at home. You may also wear a brace to stabilize your knee and use crutches for a while to avoid putting weight on your knee.
The ACL can be injured or torn in a number of different ways. The most common mechanism is that of a sudden pivoting or cutting maneuver during sporting activity, which is commonly seen in football, basketball and soccer. The ligament can also tear due to work injuries or automobile accidents.
An MRI can show the extent of an ACL injury and signs of damage to other tissues in the knee, including the cartilage. Ultrasound. Using sound waves to visualize internal structures, ultrasound may be used to check for injuries in the ligaments, tendons and muscles of the knee.
The average length is 33 mm (1.3 inches) and the width is 11 mm ( 0.43 inches). The anatomy and footprint of the ligament are very important in reconstruction. The primary function of the ACL is to limit anterior translation (forward sliding) of the tibia on the femur in the knee joint.
