Both and \033 denote an ESC, so they are the same in that regard. With that said, the two sequences are not the same. The first sequence gives one command, 34 , which means foreground color blue. The second sequence gives two commands, separated by a semicolon.
On computer keyboards, the Esc key Esc (named Escape key in the international standard series ISO/IEC 9995) is a key used to generate the escape character (which can be represented as ASCII code 27 in decimal, Unicode U+001B, or Ctrl + [ ).

The ASCII escape character (octal: \\033 , hexadecimal: \ , or ^[ , or, in decimal, 27 ) is used in many output devices to start a series of characters called a control sequence or escape sequence.
The most basic terminals have a set of 8 different colors: Black: . Red: . Green: . Yellow: . Blue: . Magenta: . Cyan: . White: .
The simplest, and perhaps most useful ANSI escape sequence is bold text, \033[1m \033[0m. The \033 represents an escape, the [1 turns on the bold attribute, while the [0 switches it off.
ASCII by itself does not have to [have three characters], but extended characters like BOLD and them typically do. Re: ASCII codes for Bold, Underline, Color, etc Bold is NOT an extended ASCII character. Bold is ASCII code 2.
