Footnotes are listed at the bottom of the page on which a citation is made. A numeral is placed in the text to indicate the cited work and again at the bottom of the page in front of the footnote. A footnote lists the author, title and details of publication, in that order.
Footnotes are notes that are placed at the end of a page and used to reference parts of the text (generally using superscript numbers). Writers use footnotes for several purposes, including citations, parenthetical information, outside sources, copyright permissions, background information, and more.
Endnotes are single-spaced with double-spaced between. Each first footnote or endnote entry must include the author's name, the title, the source or publisher, and the date of publication. The footnote usually includes the author's name, publication title, publication information, date of publication, and page number(s) if it is the first time the source is being used. For any additional usage, simply use the author's last name, publication title, and date of publication.
Chicago's bibliography style of citation Footnotes and endnotes are formulated in exactly the same way -- the only difference is that footnotes appear on the bottom of the page on which a work is cited, whereas endnotes appear at the end of a manuscript.
In both MLA and APA, a footnote example includes the citation found at the bottom, or foot, of the page corresponding to the superscript number found in the body of the work. The footnote might consist of the type of work and author's name along with other information related to the type of citation.
Footnotes appear on the bottom of the page that contains the sentence to which it refers. Endnotes are listed at the end of the paper on separate pages. On the top of the first page, the title “Notes” is centered one inch from the top of the page. Endnote pages are placed before the bibliography.
Short Form and Ibid. When citing the same source in multiple consecutive footnotes, to avoid repetition, the title may be omitted from the citation. The page number should be included in each footnote, even if it is the same as the previous footnote.
The footnote contains the number of the citation followed by a period and then the citation itself. The citation always includes the author's name and the title of the text, and it always ends with a period. Full notes also include all the relevant publication information in parentheses (which varies by source type).
