Open the workbook you want to protect. Click the File menu, and then click Passwords. In the File Passwords dialog box, select the Read-only recommended check box, and click OK.

Protect an Excel file Select File Info. Select the Protect Workbook box and choose Encrypt with Password. Enter a password in the Password box, and then select OK. Confirm the password in the Reenter Password box, and then select OK.
Note that you can use any combination of the following formulas to generate a password with a different specific length: CHAR(RANDBETWEEN(65,90)) to generate a random uppercase letter. RANDBETWEEN(0,9) to generate a random number between 0 and 9. CHAR(RANDBETWEEN(97,122)) to generate a random lowercase letter.
