Is it Better to Use Margin or Padding? Use a margin when you want to adjust the spacing of an element and use padding when you want to adjust the appearance of the element itself. Margins arent a part of the element; padding is.
Padding - The inner space between the content and the border of your box. Border - The perimeter of the box. Borders can be invisible or they could be a thick colored line like the green one pictured above. Margin - The outer space (or lack of space) surrounding the box.
In HTML margins work the same way in giving space away from the edge of the page. Borders simply wrap the element. A border can wrap immediately around an element, or it may look further away from an element if more padding has been applied to the element. Padding provides space around the element.
On the Page Layout tab, in the Page Setup group, click Margins. Click the margin type that you want. For the most common margin width, click Normal. Note: When you click the margin type that you want, your entire document automatically changes to the margin type that you have selected.
Page margins should be consistent throughout the text. Required Margins: The top, bottom, and right margins are required to be 1 inch, but the left margin can either be 1 inch or 1.25 inches.
Border - A border that goes around the padding and content. Margin - Clears an area outside the border.
In CSS, a margin is the space around an elements border, while padding is the space between an elements border and the elements content. Put another way, the margin property controls the space outside an element, and the padding property controls the space inside an element.
The and elements have a top and bottom margin of 16px ( 1em ) and a padding-left of 40px ( 2.5em ). The list items ( elements) have no set defaults for spacing.
