Patency means the line is open and not blocked (like a patent airway)!
A patent application or patent may contain drawings, also called patent drawings, illustrating the invention, some of its embodiments (which are particular implementations or methods of carrying out the invention), or the prior art.
For a utility patent, a patent number typically will be in the millions (e.g. 6,434,333). For a design patent, a patent number typically will be in the hundreds of thousands and will start with the letter D or the letters Des. (e.g. D339,332 or Des. 339,332).
This unique option of US design patent law gives applicants some flexibility to show certain parts of a product without claiming those parts. The dashed line feature also enables an applicant to show the environment or context surrounding the claimed design by illustrating, but not claiming, what is external.
Hidden Lines: Hidden lines are seen in Utility patents more often than others. They are used when a line is obstructed by another part, device, or embodiment and that line needs to be disclosed for patent filing purposes. This line type will appear as dashed.
The text must be written in a non-script type font (e.g., Arial, Times Roman, or Courier, preferably a font size of 12) lettering style having capital letters which should be at least 0.3175 cm (0.125 inches) high, but not smaller than 0.21 cm (0.08 inch) high (e.g., a font size of 6).
Some of the important line types those we can use in drawings for patents are Solid Line, Phantom Line, Projected Line, Hidden Line, and Boundary Line. These lines help the patent examiner to clearly understand the invention and get an idea of how the invention looks like to improve the scope of getting the patent.
