The ambiance of an art gallery or museum contributes docHubly to the viewers experience. LED lighting provides unparalleled control over brightness and distribution, allowing curators to create the perfect ambiance for each piece. This precise control ensures that each artwork is viewed under optimal conditions.
Lighting museums and art galleries well is extremely important. Light helps draw attention to works of art while preventing damage to the work itself. Often, these two imperatives tend to conflict with one another: exposing artwork to a source of intense light can sometimes affect its quality.
Spotlights and regular floods tightly focused on the art will do nearly all the work lighting the room, and warmer color temperatures tend to look better. If there is not enough light bounce from these spots to make the room navigable, dim wide floods can be used to bring up walls and floors to balance out the room.
Incandescent lamps are generally used for ambient and accent lighting with track luminaires. In museums, incandescent, fiber optic and HID are the most common light sources.
Exposure hours are multiplied by recommended light intensity to calculate lux hours. Using average annual light exposure, the recommended maximum number of lux hours is: For very sensitive items, 100,000 lux hours. For moderately sensitive items, 450,000 lux hours.
Skylark Galleries is a community-run art gallery based in Southbank, London. Our collective of 30 artists create a wide range of original and unique abstract art.
Fluorescent light bulbs: Long lifespan Fluorescent light bulbs have some advantages for museum display, such as: Less UV and IR radiation than incandescent light bulbs. A long lifespan, typically around 10 000 hours. They consume less energy and generate less heat than incandescent light bulbs.
Spotlights under 20 can be used for small pieces and 3D objects shown in the round, regular flood lights between 20 and 35 are good for middle and larger framed works, and wide flood lights over 35 are best for lighting very large works and whole walls.
