All headings are now written in title case (important words capitalized) and boldface. Headings are distinguished only by the use of italics, indentation, and periods. Text starts a new paragraph.
Use boldface only for headings within the body of your paper, that is, within the text itselfthese headings we refer to by levels (Levels 13 use boldface; Level 4 uses boldface and italic; Level 5 uses italics only). This blog on headings describes the levels in more detail (see also Section 3.03 on pp. 6263).
Note: Headings for Title, Abstract, and References are not in bold but otherwise follow Level 1 format. Your paragraph text begins a double-spaced line below the heading, with a -inch indentation at the start of each paragraph. Indented, bold, lowercase, and ending with a period.
After the introduction (regardless of whether it includes headings), use a Level 1 heading for the next main section of the paper (e.g., Method). Use Level 2 headings for subsections of Level 1 headings. Do not label headings with numbers or letters. All topics of equal importance should have the same level of heading.
They should be formatted in boldface and the important words of the heading should be capitalized. In addition to the above rules, headings and subheadings also should not be accompanied by letters or numbers. You should use as many levels as required in your paper to present the most organized structure.
On the first page of the text, you should repeat the paper title in title case, bold, and centered. Use double-spacing throughout the paper, left align the text and indent the first line of each paragraph by one tab key (usually set to 0.5 in.).
