I pocket carry fountain pens all the time, both cartridge-converter pens as well as the pocket ink tanks. I generally wont hesitate to carry any of my more compact fountain pens in my pocket as long as Im conscious of not doubling up with keys, knives, etc.
When flying with bottled ink, make sure the bottle is well sealed and well padded. Its always wise to pack ink in a plastic bag in case of accidents. Since inks are liquids, take note of airport security rules about liquids as you pack.
Airlines sometimes just discourage you from taking gel pens on flight.
Ink Packaging for Airplane Travel Yes. You totally can. Theyre fine in your carry-on if you keep to the limits on liquids that TSA sets. Theyre also fine in your checked luggage.
The direct answer to the question, Can you bring fountain pens on a plane? is yes. Fountain pens are generally allowed in both carry-on and checked luggage.
Hence, air pressure is low at higher altitudes. Fountain pens or toothpastes brought to higher altitudes from lower altitude regions contain air at high pressure (equal to that of the low altitude region it is brought from). Due to this difference in air pressure, the air inside the pen forces the ink to come out.
Passengers are permitted to bring pens, including fountain pens and ballpoints, in their carry-on luggage. However, for those carrying ink refills or fountain pens, its advisable to take precautions against ink leakage due to cabin pressure changes during the flight.
I have traveled with full bottles in my luggage. I recommend checking the caps are tight enough, some have suggested using packing tape to be sure they dont wiggle loose. Then I ziploc them individually and pad them with bubble wrap.
