Using a Behavior Contract. One thing that can be helpful to some students with ADHD is the incorporation of a behavior contract. Like any other contract, a behavior contract establishes clear goals and stipulates what all parties involved agree to do in pursuit of these goals.
These components include goal setting, reinforcement strategies, and consequences for behavior. By combining these elements, behavior contracts provide a structured framework for promoting positive behavior change in individuals with autism.
The contract outlines expectations for your childs behavior. It lays out any specific behaviors your child struggles with or is working on, along with goals for those behaviors. Ideally the goals will be attainable but still challenging. It also outlines the rewards and consequences for meeting or not meeting goals.
Components of a Behavior Contract Description of the desired and expected behaviors to be performed. Goal statement specifying by when and under what conditions reinforcer will be earned. Identification of the reinforcer(s) to be earned (i.e., The Pay-Off) Signatures from all parties involved.
It also outlines the rewards and consequences for meeting or not meeting goals. For example, if kids have trouble remembering to raise their hand in class, the contract may include a goal that they call out less than three times a day.
The components of a great behavioral contract Specific targeted behaviors. Expected consequences for breaking the contract. A track record of when a student has met the behavioral contract expectations. An expected contract duration. A celebration once students have met all expectations in their contracts.
