It is from Latin, in fact, and it means exempli gratia. So when do we use it? When we want to give an example of something, a general example. So yesterday I went to the supermarket and I bought some food, for example, or e.g., milk, bread and cheese. So I gave you an example of some of the things I bought. Maybe I bought some more things as well but I just gave you an example. Compare that to the abbreviation i-e (i.e.)which is id est in Latin and id est actually means THAT IS.
