A certificate of insurance (COI) is a document from an insurer to show you have business insurance.
Certificates should be retained for at least 3 years after the conclusion of the business for which the certificate was obtained.
The COI verifies the existence of an insurance policy and summarizes the key aspects and conditions of the policy. For example, a standard COI lists the policyholders name, the policys effective date, the type of coverage, policy limits, and other important details of the policy.
Call your broker, explain to them what the minimum coverage amount is and that you need proof of insurance. If your policy already meets the requirements, then the broker will contact your carrier to secure the COI.
To put it bluntly: a declaration page is not the same thing as a certificate of insurance. A declaration page is an internal document for a policyholders reference, whereas a certificate of insurance is an external-facing document used to present evidence of insurance coverage to or for third parties.

The certificate of insurance is valid for as long as your policy is active. Once your policy expires, your certificate can only be used to prove that you had insurance coverage at a given period, but it doesnt help with future projects.
Companies typically ask for certificates of insurance for two major reasons: To verify that a third party theyre hiring has the correct insurance in place to do a job. To shield their business from unnecessary financial hardship in the event of an incident that could become a claim.
