As heading levels visually convey levels of importance, differences in text format are used to distinguish the main points from the rest. Headings are generally bigger, and may be centred and/or bold; subheadings should be increasingly less noticeable than preceding subheadings.
Click Bold. in the Font group on the Home tab. Type the keyboard shortcut: CTRL+B.
The best way to emphasize a heading is by putting space above and below, because it's both subtle and effective. Use bold, not italic. For headings, bold is easier to read than italic and stands out better on the page. And since the choice is bold or italic—not both—you should prefer bold.
Use boldface only for headings within the body of your paper, that is, within the text itself—these headings we refer to by levels (Levels 1–3 use boldface; Level 4 uses boldface and italic; Level 5 uses italics only). This blog on headings describes the levels in more detail (see also Section 3.03 on pp. 62–63).
We use bold for emphasis, when we want to make sure that our reader sees and takes in certain words. The main examples are: Keywords, for example in a dictionary, where each headword is usually in bold.
- Bold text. - Important text. - Italic text. - Emphasized text.
Bold, bold face, or bold font creates the appearance of darker text by applying a thicker stroke weight to the letters. Using bold text in a body paragraph helps emphasize a remark or comment.
If you do need subheadings, be sure to differentiate these from the headings, i.e. by bolding one and italicizing the other. Also, subheadings are not generally in a larger font than the text.
They're intended for emphasis and if everything (i.e.: a whole paragraph) is all caps/bold/italic, nothing is emphasized. Italicization is used for gentle emphasis, bold is used for heavier emphasis. All caps are another alternative means of emphasis. None of these should be used on more than a few words together.
Bold – a typeface that makes a character thicker than the regular one. Boldfacing is often used for emphasis, headings, subheads, highlight keywords, etc.
