The most effective letters of recommendation are written by professors or work supervisors who know you well enough to describe your academic, personal, or professional achievements and potential with candor, detail, and objectivity. Letters that compare you to your academic peers are often the most useful.
Letters of Recommendation (LOR) Best Practices: 1) Letters should be written on UW letterhead with 10-12 point font size, since spaced and no more than 2 pages in length.
The best reference is from someone who has high regard for your work, knows you well and is a good writer. Ideally, your reference should be able to evaluate your performance in the same way and in the same language as law schools admissions committee members evaluate students in their program.
Font sizes of between 10 and 12 and standard publishing fonts such as Times New Roman and Century are preferred. The convention is to single-space your type, skip lines between each paragraph, and either consistently choose no indentation for paragraphs or indent each paragraph one-half inch.
A strong law school letter of recommendation should meet these goals: Identifies the writer and their relationship with you. Conveys factual evidence about you and your achievements/experiences. Doesnt use unsupported adjectives like creative or mature without explaining why your recommender describes you that way.
When writing your own letter of recommendation, keep these tips in mind. Do not sell yourself short. Modesty is the last thing you need in a recommendation letter. State the recommenders relationship to you. Only include relevant skills and examples. Write in the third person.
Letters of recommendation do three things: I) provide facts about the applicant 2) render a judgment as to the applicants ability and 3) make the applicant come alive, stand out against other applicants so that he or she will be remembered in the decision process.
The letter should be about one page in length and generally consist of three parts: opening, body, and closing. The writer should explain the relationship between himself/herself and the candidate as well as why the letter is being written.
